Firm Overview

Sana Capital (“Sana”) is a Latinx-owned healthcare venture capital firm that partners with entrepreneurs and growth-stage businesses that share our mission to increase access, improve outcomes, and reduce costs across the U.S. healthcare system. Sana Capital is raising its debut fund as a firm with a fund target size of $50M (up to $100M including co-investment). Sana Capital has raised approximately $10M in commitments.  Sana Capital's General Partner has an impressive track record growing companies, including 14 healthcare company investments and 2 IPOs including athenahealth and Wellcare. The most recent unicorn is Independent Living Systems, a managed long term care business that allows seniors to age in place. Sana’s policy-driven approach is unique (and untapped) in this field and demonstrates a strong path for success. Sana has a mission driven and targeted focus on underserved populations.

Investment Thesis:

In our policy-driven investment approach, Sana studies federal, state, and commercial policy trends to identify attractive healthcare sub-sectors and high-growth technology empowered companies offering healthcare IT and servicesto underserved populations.

Investment Overview:

Sana Capital is particularly focused on high growth companies offering IT and services to overlooked markets. Sana utilizes a policy-driven approach to identify trends and opportunities ripe for investment. We study federal, state, and commercial healthcare policy trends to invest in healthcare companies and their underlying innovations. We monetize gaps in healthcare by forging partnerships with undiscovered founders and expanding health equity to historically excluded populations. Sana works closely with founders to build valuable and impactful businesses.

Company Differentiator:

Sana Capital is differentiated in its policy-driven investment approach and it's "connected approach," in developing talent and identifying founders. Regarding our policy-driven approach, most investment firms do not wish to underwrite policy, regulatory, government, or reimbursement risks. Sana Capital uniquely knows how to assess and underwrite these government and policy risks, giving us an advantage on sub-sector selection.  Regarding our connected approach talent and sourcing, we have strong relationships with innovative and disruptive founders. Increasingly, they are coming from Black, Latin, Women, LGBTQ, and non-traditional demographics, who we believe are representative of the biggest opportunities in healthcare and federal policy's health equity initiatives. Our team and team buildout is intentionally diverse poising us to monetize these opportunities by connecting diverse and underserved populations to diverse founders and disruptors and, finally, to Sana Capital's expertise and capital.

Investment Example

Illinois-based Company A, Practice Management for FQHCs, that provides health centers software-based practice transformation services is a prospective investment. Company A, whose software automates providers' and FQHCs' transition to value-based patient contracts, aligns with the federal policy incentivizing reimbursement for value-based care (rather than fee-for-service). As value-based care is intended to incentivize providers according to the quality of the care they perceive, Company A is also aligned with Sana Capital in that its intervention poses potential to improve health outcomes.

Investments systematically target companies where social and/or environmental impact is integral to the product/service being created:

We target growing healthcare businesses where the populations are: Black, Latinx, AAPI, women, and the elderly that are underserved. And where the founders are: Black, Latinx, AAPI, women; serving communities that are under-resourced.

Investments systematically include social and environmental sustainability practices in the due diligence process:

See above, diversity is a key competitive advantage. Sana takes a connected approach and are well positioned to monetize these opportunities by connecting the populations --> to the founders --> to the capital and expertise.
