Investment Example

We invested in Agronutris, a French biotech firm founded in 2011 with the mission of feeding and preserving a sustainable world through bioconversion. It's disruptive solution: insect-based protein solutions Obtained through bioconversion from farm waste as its main raw material, Agronutris’ alternative protein can be used for several purposes: • feed for aquaculture-farmed fish (replacing fishmeal proteins); • feed for the petfood industry (replacing meat or fish proteins); • or for direct human consumption (even if this remains marginal to date). With this solution, Agronutris meets 3 challenges in 1: • reducing the impact of aquaculture on the oceans; • meeting the protein requirements of a growing population; • and the recovery and recycling of farm by-products and waste.

Investments systematically target companies where social and/or environmental impact is integral to the product/service being created:

Mirova’s private assets platform is an impact investment platform which only invests in companies that demonstrate positive social and environmental impacts. Our screening process identifies all positive impacts in key impact areas - climate, species, ecosystems, livelihoods, inclusivity, sustainable enterprise, fair economic return, partners...). Through the due diligence process we works closely with projects to maximise their potential positive environmental and social impact performance.  We focus only on financing activities that address major global challenges, such as climate change, environment protection (landscapes, natural resources, lands, oceans...).

Investments systematically include social and environmental sustainability practices in the due diligence process:

Mirova’s ESG Standard requires projects to comply with the IFC Performance Standards and the IFC Environmental Health & Safety Guidelines. This means all companies into which we invest must assess and develop a system to manage all environmental and social risks.  Our due diligence process involves a gap analysis between companies' current standards and our ESG Standard. All gaps identified are written into an environmental and social action plan, and compliance with the plan forms part of our investment contract.  Rather than simply screening out projects with sub-optimal performance, the Fund can add value by enabling better performance in those projects that have the potential to improve. Companies that do not have the willingness or ability to reach our ESG Standard will not receive investment.
